Port Arthur is a scenic 90 minute drive from Hobart along the Tasman Peninsula. The park, which is spread across 16ha, is situated just north of the town centre and enjoys sweeping views across Ladies Bay. There’s an impressive array of facilities, including a state of the art amenities block, a BMX pump track and a modern camp kitchen with pizza oven, plus practical amenities including a well stocked kiosk, a coin operated laundry and a sheltered barbecue area. Younger children are well catered for with a large playground and free kids’ activities during the school holidays, while the whole family will love building a fire on site, with firewood available to purchase.The accommodation
The park offers sites, cabins and dorm rooms to suit all tastes. Campers can choose between spacious powered or unpowered sites plus powered ensuite sites for additional privacy. All sites include a car space. The bunkhouse is a great option for larger groups. It contains four single bunks and includes a TV plus access to shared bathroom and kitchen facilities.Couples can opt for an oversized studio cabin with a queen bed and kitchenette, or upgrade to a one bedroom cabin for a full kitchen and verandah. Safari tents are a fun option for families. They sleep two adults and two kids and have kitchenettes and bathrooms. There are also fully equipped two bedroom waterview and deluxe waterview cabins, plus an indulgent peninsula cabin with a spa and electric fireplace.
The neighbourhood
It’s wise to set aside a full day to experience the Port Arthur Historic Site– it’s surprisingly large and many of the historic buildings are worth investigating up close. There’s no need to leave the grounds for meals, as the coffee shop serves lunch and dinner, or you can take Devonshire Tea in the restored nineteenth century home of the Visiting Magistrate. Fright fans should return in the evening for the infamous Ghost Tour, which runs every day except Christmas Day.Beyond the historic site, several excellent walks are within easy reach. For a challenging full day trek with stunning views, try the Cape Raoul Walk. Or to experience the Tasman Peninsula’s rugged beauty in relative comfort, book a three hour boat tour with local company Tasman Island Cruises. There’s also great food to be had in and around the town – visit the all day cafe at Port Arthur Lavender for incredible seafood chowder, tuck into above average pub grub at the Fox and Hounds or treat yourself to steak and scallops at fine diner Gabriel’s On The Bay.
